How do e cigs work?

Electronic cigarettes are designed to deliver a dose of nicotine without burning tobacco.

An e-cigarette has three main parts:

  • a rechargeable lithium battery
  • a vaporization chamber
  • a cartridge

The basic design has the cartridge holding the liquid, this is often a mix of:

  • Pharmaceutical grade propylene glycol (used in a variety of common food items such as cake mix, vanilla extract, and food colouring);
  • Pharmaceutical grade vegetable glycerin (also used in a variety of food products);
  • Tobacco flavour derived from natural tobacco extracts or other flavours;
  • Nicotine, some are nicotine free.

When the cartridge is inserted into the e-cig, the cartridge filler makes contact with the atomizer’s bridge. Using gravity and capillary action, juice is absorbed via the atomizer bridge into the atomizer’s steel mesh reservoir where it sits.

When the user inhales on the e-cig, this action “pulls” the liquid from the atomizer’s reservoir into the ceramic atomizer pot. This liquid is then absorbed by the aromatic polyimide wick (which is situated inside the ceramic pot). At the same time, the device is heating the coil around the wick and therefore heating the liquid until it becomes a vapor. This vapor is drawn up through the e-cig and out of the mouthpiece.

How can I maximise the life of my cartridges?

Get the most out of your cartridge by following these tips:

  • Keep cartridges covered when not in use to prevent evaporation.
  • Always take a slow, long drag inhaling as you puff.
  • Take 10 – 15 puffs per session

How can I maximise the life of my batteries?

  • Do not leave the battery in your mouth between drags – or blow into it.
  • beware that batteries are moisture-sensitive.
  • Store your batteries properly, do not leave them loose or drop them.
